Cold storage rental in Malaysia is usually priced one of two ways: per pallet - often quoted per pallet per day - or per square foot per month. As an indicative guide for 2026, published market rates commonly sit around RM2-RM5 per square foot per month, or from about RM5 per pallet per day.

The real figure depends on the temperature your goods need, how many pallets you store, how long they stay, and how much handling and delivery you include. Most cold-chain providers, Arctic included, quote against your actual needs rather than a fixed shelf price - so the useful question is not just the headline rate, but what the all-in monthly cost works out to.

What goes into a cold storage rental price?

A cold storage rental price is what you pay to keep goods in temperature-controlled space you do not own. It bundles the space itself, the refrigeration and power to hold it cold, and the monitoring and upkeep behind it - and may or may not include handling goods in and out, order picking, and delivery. Because frozen and chilled space costs far more to run than dry warehousing, cold storage is always priced above ambient storage.

How cold storage is priced in Malaysia

Two pricing models cover most of the market, and providers often quote whichever fits your volume.

  • Per pallet - you pay for each pallet position you use, commonly quoted per pallet per day (around RM5/pallet/day appears in published market rates). Suits variable, smaller, or overflow volumes.
  • Per square foot - you pay for the floor area you take, usually per square foot per month (commonly RM2-RM5/sq ft/month in published rates). Suits large, steady, dedicated space.

Figures are indicative market ranges as of 2026 and vary by provider, location, temperature, and volume.

What drives the cost up or down

  • Temperature - frozen storage costs more to run than chilled, which costs more than ambient
  • Volume and commitment - more pallets and longer terms usually earn a better rate
  • Duration - short-term overflow is priced differently from long-term capacity
  • Handling - moving goods in and out, and order picking, may be charged on top of storage
  • Delivery - onward distribution is a separate cost unless bundled in
  • Location - proximity to your routes and to ports affects total landed cost

The costs people forget

The headline rate is rarely the whole bill. Before you compare two quotes, check whether each of these is included or charged separately.

  • Loading, unloading, and order-picking charges
  • Minimum volume or minimum contract term
  • Utility, fuel, or peak-season surcharges
  • Extra space you only need at your busiest time of year
  • Getting goods delivered out, not just stored

Per pallet vs. per square foot

Which model is cheaper depends on how steady and how large your storage is.

How to read a cold storage quoteFive checks that let you compare two quotes like for like.

  1. 01

    Confirm the temperature

Is the quote for frozen or chilled? They are not priced the same.

  2. 02

    Check what's included

Handling in and out, order picking, monitoring, and delivery - bundled, or billed separately?

  3. 03

    Ask about minimums

Minimum volume and minimum contract term decide whether a low rate actually applies to you.

  4. 04

    Test the flex

How does capacity move up in peak season and down when you do not need it?

  5. 05

    Total the all-in cost

Add storage, handling, and delivery into one monthly figure - then compare that, not the headline rate.

Cold storage cost questions, answered

How much does cold storage cost per pallet in Malaysia?

Published market rates start from around RM5 per pallet per day, but the figure moves with temperature, how many pallets you store, and how long they stay. Per-pallet pricing suits variable or overflow volumes; for large, steady storage, a per-square-foot rate is often cheaper. The only accurate number is a quote against your actual goods and volume.

Is cold storage more expensive than normal warehousing?

Yes. Cold storage carries the cost of refrigeration, power, and continuous temperature monitoring on top of the space itself, so it is always priced above dry, ambient warehousing. Frozen storage costs more than chilled, which costs more than ambient.

Why don't providers just publish one fixed price?

Because the true cost depends on your specifics - temperature, pallet count, duration, handling, and delivery. A fixed shelf price would either overcharge small users or underprice complex ones. That is why cold-chain providers, Arctic included, quote against your needs after a short discovery.

Is it cheaper to rent or to build my own cold room?

For most businesses, renting. Building a cold room can cost from around RM1 million to tens of millions of ringgit, before you staff, monitor, and maintain it. Renting turns that large fixed investment into a flexible operating cost - see our cold room rental page for how that works.
